I really liked one of my watercolor painting of camellias, so I sketched the design based on the artwork using a pencil.Ģ. Bold and simple designs work really well for block printing and definitely easier for beginners. I wanted to design something pretty to print on an A2 size greeting card (4.25″ x 5.5″), so I drew the frame that’s the size of the card in my sketchbook first. So as soon as I got my book, I created my own stamps using art foam sheets and documented the process for you! I became interested in the art foam stamp making because it requires no carving and is great for beginners or those who just want to experiment with block printing. So I picked up this gorgeous book by Andrea Lauren recently to learn about stamp making using art foam sheet, which requires no carving.įirst of all, this books is beautiful! Her work is amazing and often very intricate – but she shares step-by-step instructions on how to create your own stamps and blocks in a very user-friendly way. Though block printing tools and materials I use for the class are super easy to handle (no linocut or wood block because they’re tough for beginners), I think some students are still intimidated by the idea of carving a block. I’ve been thinking about offering a workshop that’s similar but a little more accessible. I love teaching the class and get so inspired by all the beautiful student work!! Here is a fun picture from my last workshop… □ Place a big drop at the cuticle and hold brush parallel to the nail while applying trying not to touch the nail with the bristles, this helps prevents smearing.I’ve been teaching block printing workshops in Seattle since last spring. When design is completely dry on your nail, apply a layer of fresh top coat with as few strokes as possible. ![]() Remove excess nail polish from your skin and cuticles by using a flat brush or cotton swab dipped in acetone or nail polish remover, you could use tape to lift excess polish from your skin as well. With a squishier stamper push the stamper straight to the nail, with other stamper heads it might work better to roll it once from side to side to transfer image. Quickly transfer the image from the stamper onto a nail with an oil free and completely dry base color. If your image does not transfer you may need to work faster, scrape differently (less pressure or new angle), prime your stamper (with acetone or gentle nail file/buffer) or try another opaque nail polish that doesn’t dry very fast. ![]() Immediately after scraping, quickly transfer the design to your stamper by lightly rolling once across the design from one side to the other or pushing once straight into the design.Try to only scrape once, do not push card to plate too hard and work as quickly as possible to avoid drying. Hold a plastic card firmly at a 45 degree angle and lightly scrape across the plate to remove excess polish.Try another polish if you are not getting results you want. Special stamping polishes are recommended but opaque nail polishes that do not dry very fast also work well. Quickly apply a thick layer of nail polish in a few strokes over the design you wish to stamp.Сlean your stamper with tape by using the sticky side to remove dry polish. When you first receive your plate and after every use wipe clean your plate with acetone or non-acetone nail polish remover without oils. Remove your new stamping plate from its packaging and remove the plastic protective film from over the metal.
